What is OptikamPad?
OptikamPad is an all-in-one digital dispensing solution for Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) that utilizes an iPad to capture precise ophthalmic measurements, assist in frame selection, and demonstrate lens benefits through augmented reality.
How does OptikamPad improve the patient experience?
It modernizes the dispensary by replacing manual tools with an interactive tablet experience, allowing patients to see themselves in different frames via side-by-side photos and visualize lens enhancements like Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings, progressive lens designs or photochromics in real-time.
What is the patented OPD?
The Optikam Posture Device (OPD) is a proprietary hardware device that clips onto a patient's chosen frame to provide a fixed reference point, ensuring sub-millimeter accuracy for "Position of Wear" measurements that manual methods cannot replicate.
How long does it take to take measurements with Optikam?
A single frontal photograph captures 10 essential measurements in less than 60 seconds, significantly faster than using a manual pupillometer and marking lenses with a Sharpie.
Does Optikam work for both independent ODs and large chains?
Yes. Its portable, iPad-based design is scalable for high-volume clinics and boutiques alike, offering a "Swiss Neutral" technology that works with any lens laboratory.
What specific measurements does OptikamPad capture?
It captures Monocular PDs, Multifocal Fitting Heights, Pantoscopic Tilt, Rear Vertex Distance (RVD), Wrap Angle (Face Form Tilt), Near PD, and Frame Dimensions (A, B, ED, DBL).
What are "As-Worn" measurements?
"As-Worn" measurements account for the unique way a frame sits on a patient's face (tilt, wrap, and distance from the eye), allowing the lens laboratory to optimize digital progressive lenses for the patient's actual visual axis.
How does Optikam handle head rotation during measurement?
The software includes a built-in "Posture Indicator" and references on the OPD to ensure the iPad is perfectly parallel to the patient's face, eliminating parallax errors.
Is the system accurate for high-prescription or complex lenses?
Yes. By capturing the corneal reflection and correcting for convergence and tilt, Optikam provides the precise centration required for Freeform digital lenses.
Why is one photo better than multiple exposures?
A single photo ensures all measurements are taken at the same moment using the patient's natural posture, preventing the "measurement drift" that occurs when a patient moves between separate readings.
Does Optikam integrate with EHR solutions?
Yes. OptikamPad offers direct integration with major Practice Management Software (PMS) to import patient data and export measurements seamlessly.
Can I use OptikamPad on multiple iPads at once?
Yes. With an Optikam Cloud subscription and licensing for the desired number of devices, your customer database is unified across all devices in your practice.
Is my patient data secure?
Absolutely. Optikam uses encrypted cloud hosting and role-based security to ensure all patient data is handled according to healthcare privacy standards.
What are the system requirements for OptikamPad?
OptikamPad is optimized for modern iPads. We recommend using the latest iPad Pro or iPad models for the best camera resolution and processing speed.
Can I access my measurements from a web browser?
Yes. The Cloud service allows you to retrieve measurement images and generate reports from any computer web browser, facilitating easy troubleshooting or lab ordering.
What should I do if the software can't find the pupils automatically?
In the unlikely event of the software not auto-detecting the pupils due to lighting or reflections on demo lenses, you can manually place the cursors on the corneal reflections without needing to retake the photo.
How do I prevent blurry images?
Tap the "Focus" button before capturing. We recommend resting your elbows on the dispensing table or holding the iPad steady with both hands to minimize movement.
How do I clean the OPD?
Use a standard alcohol-free optical lens wipe to clean the prism and sensors. Avoid harsh chemicals.
My iPad is not connecting to the OPD. How do I fix this?
Ensure Bluetooth is enabled and the device is awake (indicated by a blinking blue light). The device enters sleep mode after 2 minutes of inactivity to save battery.
How much training is required for my staff?
The app is designed to be intuitive. Most opticians can become proficient within 20-30 minutes using the built-in "3D Training Scenarios" and interactive help guides.
Does Optikam help reduce lab remakes?
Yes. By catching pre-fit and posture errors on a static photo before ordering, practices typically see a significant reduction in non-tolerance remakes.
Can Optikam demonstrate lens thickness?
Yes. The Lens Demo module allows patients to compare the thickness of different indices (e.g., 1.50 vs. 1.67) using their actual prescription and chosen frame.
Does the software help with frame selection for high-Rx patients?
Yes. Patients who can't see themselves in the mirror without their glasses can use the Frame Selection module to see high-resolution photos of themselves in up to eight different frames.
Is there an annual subscription fee?
Optikam typically offers a subscription-based model for cloud services, software updates, and technical support to ensure your system is always running the latest features.
Can Optikam be used for pediatric Myopia Management?
Yes. Its precision is ideal for fitting specialized myopia control lenses (like Stellest), where centration is critical for clinical efficacy.
What is the Augmented Reality (AR) module?
The AR module uses the iPad camera to overlay lens effects (like polarized filters or anti-reflective coatings) onto a live view, helping patients understand the value of premium add-ons.
Does it measure Minimum Blank Size (MBS)?
Yes. The software automatically calculates the MBS or ED based on the frame dimensions and the patient's centration, ensuring the lab uses the correct lens diameter.
Can I email the photos to my patients?
Yes. The system allows you to email frame selection photos directly to the patient, encouraging them to share with friends and family (and increasing your brand exposure).
Does Optikam support rimless frame measurements?
Yes. The software includes specific tools for measuring the drill points and lens shapes required for rimless and semi-rimless mountings.
What is the Optikam "No-Device" measurement mode?
The "No-Device" mode uses patented LiDAR technology and Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors on compatible iPads to capture essential ophthalmic measurements—like PDs and fitting heights—without requiring the patient to wear a physical reference clip or the OPD on their frames.
How does LiDAR technology ensure accuracy without a physical reference?
Standard tablet cameras take 2D photos, which require a physical object (like a ruler or a reference clip) to establish scale. Optikam’s LiDAR solution uses laser pulses to create a 3D depth map of the patient’s face, allowing the software to calculate exact distances and measurements based on actual 3D coordinates rather than just pixels.
Which measurements can be captured using the LiDAR "No-Device" mode?
The LiDAR system is optimized for capturing Pupillary Distance (PD), segment heights, and basic Frame Measurements (A, B, DBL). For advanced "Position of Wear" measurements like Rear Vertex Distance (RVD) and Pantoscopic Tilt, the software uses improved LiDAR algorithms and a second or third image to provide the additional position-of-wear measurements.
When should I use LiDAR vs. the OPD?
* Use LiDAR: For quick, frictionless measurements for single-vision lenses, low-power progressives, or when a patient is hesitant about hardware clips. It is also ideal for maintaining distance in a "touchless" dispensing workflow.
Does the LiDAR system require a specific iPad model?
Yes. To utilize the patented "No-Device" measurements, you must use an iPad equipped with a LiDAR scanner (currently available on iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd gen+), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th gen+).
Is the LiDAR scan safe for the patient’s eyes?
Absolutely. Optikam’s system utilizes low-level, eye-safe laser pulses that are standard in consumer electronics. It is a passive scan that does not require the patient to look into a bright light.
